大脑的默认模式网络
The Brain's Default Mode Network
神经科学家马库斯·雷切尔(Marcus Raichle)在2001年发现,当人们处于放松、放空、不做具体任务的状态时,大脑会激活默认模式网络(Default Mode Network,DMN)。这个网络活跃的时候,我们往往在做什么?回忆过去、想象未来、理解别人的想法、或者只是让思绪漫无目的地游荡。简单来说,“发呆”时,大脑也许在做最重要的事:整理自己、理解世界、想象可能。
In 2001, neuroscientist Marcus Raichle discovered that when people are relaxed, letting their minds wander without engaging in specific tasks, the brain activates the Default Mode Network (DMN). What do we often do when this network is active? We recall the past, imagine the future, try to understand others' thoughts, or simply let our minds drift aimlessly. In short, when we daydream, the brain may be doing something essential: organizing itself, making sense of the world, and imagining possibilities.

As early as 1926, psychologist Graham Wallas proposed the four-stage model of creativity: preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification. The incubation stage is the phase when we temporarily set a problem aside and allow the subconscious to work freely. This stage may look like daydreaming or zoning out, but in reality, the brain is unconsciously exploring new possibilities and preparing for a flash of insight. Einstein often had inspirations while playing the violin. Haruki Murakami says his ideas come to him during long runs. Mozart captured melodies during carriage rides. Archimedes shouted "Eureka!" in his bath. Inspiration rarely strikes at a desk—it often arrives during a walk, a shower, a moment of daydreaming, or in the haze between sleep and wakefulness.

That’s why we quietly leave certain corners around campus—corners with no tasks, no goals, and no "shoulds." They are simply there to tell our students: It's okay to do nothing.
